Gosh! At first sight I was startled and thought global warning is resulting in production of sea monsters and my death is near!
However, when I read further I took a sigh of relief and acknowledged that this is a natural wonder. Conservation Department community relations programme manager Stacy Moore revealed that these are actually goose barnacles (Lepas anatifera) attached to either a piece of rope or wood.
The sight has horrified many beachgoers at Waikanae. Each goose barnacle measures around thirty centimeters.
