A gigantic hand-woven carpet measuring 5,625 sq m (60,546 sq ft) has made Iran set a world record of the biggest carpet in the world. One can very well imagine the huge size of the carpet, as it is bigger than a football field. The carpet has been woven with green, red, cream and some 25 other colored wool from the town of Sirjan, in southern Iran and New Zealand.
It took 1,200 weavers some 18 months to make the carpet that will become a property of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates. The carpet is woven from 38 tons of wool and cotton and has 2.2 billion knots. It is not one single piece and is made of nine individual pieces joined together. The nine pieces will be stitched together after they reach Abu Dhabi.
The production of the carpet comes as an important commission for Iran’s carpet-making industry, which would eventually lead to further orders.
After this wonderful production the country is in talks with Oman and other Gulf countries for export of such carpets.
