Da Vinci’s Last Supper is online: The Holy Grail goes digital!

It is arguably history’s most controversial painting & along with the magical smile of Mona Lisa happens to be the most talked about art piece to have been ever brushed on the canvas. It is indeed amazing that Leonardo Da Vinci has kept hundreds & thousands of thrill seekers, scholars & in fact the entire world interested for several centuries in his paintings. It probably is a fitting tribute to the man’s genius & his creative artistry. From the great man’s vibrant brush came the most famous work of all, which left more questions than answers.

“The Last Supper” will forever be shrouded with mystery. While some will endlessly formulate conspiracy theories from the paint on the back halls of the dining hall at Santa Maria Delle Grazie, others will just marvel at the brilliance of each stroke. Now the famous scene where Jesus disclosed to his disciples that one of them would betray their leader is online & available at your finger tips. Italian tech firm, HAL9000, has newly posted a 16 billion pixels high resolution image of the image that virtually gave Mary Magdalene’s believers a major boost. (Before the self proclaimed experts tell me about the title, I know the grail is visible missing from Da Vinci’s work)

The painting which has been studied dissected & has been the focus of many a debate has faced many restoration problems, since the first few decades passed after it was painted. While Da Vinci used a unique method to do this mural, the method proved to be disastrous for the longevity of the piece. It had to endure several wars & some renovation that hurt the painting due to the improper methods used. After 3 decades of intense Renovation in late 90’s, the painting is now back in decent shape.

While tourists visiting Milan do have to book a good month in advance to see it, it still receives booking demands 5 times the capacity. The mural is only allowed to be viewed for 20 minutes by each viewer. (The way most of my friends look at art, they could complete taking a look at 40 paintings in that time) So this is a great opportunity for all those conspiracy theory hunters & art lovers to watch the painting that intrigues them.

But I’m a skeptic. So I actually searched for the link & went to the site. Their claims are real! It does work & it’s great. You can vary the resolution & zoom. But one day I still plan to see it in person along with the fabulous tour of Louvre. Till then, this is just an appetizer. Is it Mary Magdalene or is it John to the right of Jesus? Why did someone as knowledgeable as Da Vinci forget the Grail? Or is there a Holy Grail symbol somewhere? You decide people, now you have the chance.

I almost forgot here is the link for the actual site showing the image. Click Here & have fun.
